Cluster 6: Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment

The cluster aims at reducing environmental degradation, halting and reversing the decline of biodiversity on land, inland waters and sea and better managing natural resources through transformative changes of the economy and society in both urban and rural areas.

Areas of intervention:

  •   agriculture, forestry and rural areas
  •   seas, oceans and inland waters
  •   food systems
  •   bio-based innovation systems in the EU's bioeconomy 
  •   circular systems

Research and Innovation in this cluster will contribute to the long-term priority objectives to 2030 set out in the 8th Environment Action Programme. It will contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and accelerate the ecological transition required by the European Green Deal. Of particular relevance will be: zero hunger; good health and well-being; clean water and sanitation; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation, and infrastructure; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action, life below water; life on land". It will also contribute to the objectives of: the Biodiversity Strategy to 2030; the Farm to Fork strategy; the European Climate Pact.
The expected impacts of this cluster are contained in the Horizon Europe strategic plan.
