AI in Horizon Europe - Resources for NCPs

Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Large Language Models (LLMs) in particular, are rapidly transforming the landscape of research and innovation. In Horizon Europe, AI is not only a thematic priority but also a powerful tool that applicants can leverage throughout the proposal lifecycle - from idea generation and literature review to drafting, budgeting, and even ethics compliance.

But the integration of AI in the daily work does not come without its challenges. Promoting responsible, efficient and fair use of AI is a new task that public officers should be ready to take on. For National Contact Points (NCPs), understanding the multifaceted role of AI is essential to effectively support applicants.

How can NCPs use the resources presented below?

  • Internal Training: Using webinars and masterclasses for ongoing team development.
  • Applicant Support: Referencing concepts learned with these materials during proposal reviews, info sessions, or workshops.
  • Thematic Updates: Stay informed on regulatory, ethical, and technical developments related to AI in Horizon Europe.
  • Inter-NCP Collaboration: Share best practices and experiences with other NCPs via the Horizon Europe NCP portal (i.e. if you network project implemented a new resource, drop us an email).

The page offers a curated and continually expanding set of exclusive resources and guidance to help NCPs navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI within Horizon Europe.

AI’s Role in Horizon Europe Proposals

This webinar explores how AI can be integrated into Horizon Europe proposals, both as a research topic and as a tool. It’s useful for NCPs advising applicants on how to justify the use of AI in projects, especially in calls related to digitalisation, health, energy, or industry.

This training covers a wide range of topics, such as an introduction to generative AI, ethical considerations, regulatory environment of AI or how to make a better use of tools like ChatGPT, including prompting.

On the training page, you can access the recording, the presentations and the documents used during the session.

Typewriter

Masterclass of AI in a proposal

This training offers a deep dive into the different aspects applicants must consider when using AI in a Horizon Europe Proposal.

Here you will find insights from different key stakeholders, such as the European Commission, HE evaluators or NCPs. The contents of this training go beyond widely used AI tools such as ChatGPT, giving examples of how to use other AI tools such as Claude.ai, notebooklm, notion.ai or Elicit.

In this resource, you can acccess all the recordings of the trainings and presentations and practical exercises brought by the speakers.

Ethics and Security during proposal preparation

This resource covers ethical and security implications of using AI, including compliance with Horizon Europe’s ethics requirements. NCPs can use it to guide applicants in drafting ethics sections and identifying technological risks.

The training was organised by the European Commission Horizon Results Platform together with the EU UP Helpdesk.

IP and Artificial Intelligence

As part of a wider training series organised by the European Commission, this webinar addresses the European AI Act and other AI related regulations.

By the hand of EU officers and experts, here you will find a deep exploration of what the AI Act means in the EU landscape of R&I, including an overview of the regulatory framework, the importance of regulating AI, main objetives, risks classification and implications of IP.

Risks in using AI in HE proposals

How to (not) use AI in grant proposal writing

This resource offers a comprehensive guide of how to not use AI when writing a proposal. It focuses on risks or unintended consequences related to eligiblity, privacy, patents, and it offers a set of practical tips to take into account when using generative AI in a Horizon Europe proposal....

Policybrief

Policy Brief on Artificial Intelligence

This policy brief gives you an overview of how AI is meant to shape numerous EU policies in the upcoming years, and the main guidelines and legislative initiatives on the table. Additionally, the document has a section dedicated to AI in the context of MSCA.

Living guidelines

Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research

This living document, developed and updated by the ERA Stakeholder´s Forum, provides recommendations for the responsible use of generative AI tools in research. NCPs can use it to raise awareness about the risks, limitations, and best practices.
