Adaptation to Climate Change

The EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change supports European regions, cities, and local authorities in building resilience against climate change impacts. By 2030, the Mission aims to assist at least 150 regions and communities in becoming climate-resilient. The Mission contributes to the EU's Adaptation Strategy by helping regions understand climate risks, develop preparedness pathways, and deploy innovative solutions. The initiative aligns with the European Green Deal and emphasizes research and innovation for actionable solutions.

Why this Mission?

Climate change significantly affects regions, economies, and societies, requiring urgent action to adapt to both current and future impacts. Despite efforts to reduce emissions, a warmer climate is unavoidable, necessitating resilience-building measures. The Mission addresses these needs by equipping regions with tools and support to prepare for climate risks. It embodies best practices for managing climate risks, as highlighted in the European Climate Risk Assessment.

The Mission also contributes to the European Green Deal.

Who is it for?

The Mission targets EU countries, regions, and cities as primary drivers of climate adaptation efforts. Local authorities, supported by national strategies, lead the deployment of new technologies and solutions. Additionally, research institutions and businesses are encouraged to join as "Friends of the Mission." With over 308 signatories across 25 EU countries, the Mission fosters a broad coalition to achieve climate resilience.
